Unfortunately, it is not the easiest way to travel in Budapest and in other big cities. It’s common to have to sit in a traffic jam while we try to find a way out in the narrow streets. Also, we often get into a difficult situation where we want to stop because there are few parking spaces and they are often very tight.
These also make it difficult to decide exactly which car is best for us. We have compiled a list of factors to consider when choosing city cars.

The size of the car

When making a decision, it is important to consider exactly what we want to use the car for, how much cabin and trunk capacity we need. In case of urban transport, a car that is too big can slow down our progress, making it harder for us to move on narrow streets with it. Big cities usually lack parking spaces, making it almost impossible to find a suitable stop for a large car.

For this reason, if we know that we are going to drive a lot in the city, smaller cars are more preferable. They are much more practical, they are easier to transport and, last but not least, their consumption is much more favorable.

Gasoline or diesel engine?

This is always a divisive question, as there are so many different opinions on which type of fuel is better. It is in favor of diesel cars that they are more efficient and sustainable. On the other hand, it is much more vulnerable than the gasoline engine. In urban use, the car often runs for a short period of time, which can easily destroy diesel engines as the car does not have time to warm up properly (the worst period is the time between cold start and warm state). So it’s definitely better to think of gasoline-powered cars for urban transport.

Nowadays, more and more hybrid and electric vehicles are appearing on the market at reasonable prices, so these are also worth considering them. These cars, in addition to emitting significantly fewer harmful substances (with which we can save urban air pollution), are also much more economical in terms of their consumption.

Extras that can come in handy in high traffic

Before introducing the various extras, we must mention the issue of transmission.
In Hungary, people stick to this type because most people have learned to drive a manual car, so they feel more confident behind the wheel and they are cheaper than automatic cars. On the other hand, in case of urban transport, the automatic car is more convenient and practical, since we do not have to bother with the transmission and the clutch when we are standing in the traffic jam. Another benefit of them that they have Hill Start Assist, which makes urban transport even easier.

Hyundai I20

In addition to the type of transmission, we can come across many features, when choosing a car, that can be useful to us when driving in the city. These usually depend on equipment, not all extras can be found in cheaper offers.
Nowadays, almost every new car has rear parking sensors that will greatly help us park in tight spaces. However, if we can increase our cost limit, it is definitely worth installing a reversing camera in the car. Even automatic electric mirrors can come in handy when parking in narrow streets. In high traffic an on-board accident prevention system, an emergency braking signal and an intelligent speed limit recognition system can also be of great help.
