Maintaining a car is very expensive, not only the compulsory servicing and maintenance, but also the regular refuelling. For a company fleet, these costs multiply, so it makes sense to take as many steps as possible to reduce costs. Here are a few points on what we can do to reduce car fuel consumption.
Choice of location
When the tank is empty, it is important to plan when and where you will be able to go to the petrol station. It is typical that there are big price differences between different places and companies, so well-planned refuelling can make a big impact on spending.
Route planning
Not only should you plan the location of your refuelling in advance, it is also important to think about and check the most optimal route to reach your destination. So you can avoid busy roads and getting stuck in traffic. This not only reduces driving time, but also fuel consumption, as it avoids constant starting and stopping, which increases fuel burn.
Driving style
How dynamically and impulsively you drive also makes a big difference. The most optimal way to drive is to maintain a steady speed level and shift up as soon as possible (at around 2000 revs). It is important to try to avoid sudden stops and emergency braking. When approaching a traffic light or intersection, slow down slowly and use the engine brake if possible (newer cars have engines that automatically stop using fuel at this point).
Condition of tires
It is worth checking the condition of your tires from time to time (even monthly). Because inadequate tire pressure, as well as tire tread depth, also plays a big role in a car's fuel consumption.
Use of extras
It is important to use car extras (multimedia system, heated seats, heated windows, ...) only when you really need them. The use of these involves extra fuel consumption. It is particularly important to pay attention to the use of air conditioning, as its high speed operation can cause consumption to rise dramatically.
Other circumstances
To reduce air resistance, make sure that the roof rack is not unnecessarily placed on top of the car. If possible, bikes should be attached to the back of the car rather than the roof. Also, in summer, use the air conditioning at higher speeds and do not drive with the windows down, as this also increases air resistance and therefore fuel consumption.
As well as reducing costs, it is also important to look at your fuel consumption, because by reducing it you can also reduce your emissions.
